It's vaguely disturbing that I don't have any friends on livejournal yet, though I continue to post things. Hmmm.
Just a brief thought on what I'm currently reading.
Finished The Briar King by Greg Keyes yesterday. Briefly: Not bad, but not great either. It's well written, pretty well paced, fairly good characters, but it's just not that different. Standard epic fantasy, evil rising, motley band of characters wandering round and getting in adventures, nasty bad men who support the evil (Why? Dunno, they just do), petty squabbling going on amongst the kingdoms...pffft. I just get the feeling that I've read it all before and I'm a little sick of it. I know this series will have at least three more books, but unless the next one makes a significant departure from the standard big fat fantasy outline, I'm not going to bother with it.
On that note, I've read the prologue of The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch and I'm very impressed. Fast-moving, fresh, doesn't take itself too seriously, but it's still gritty, most promising thing I've read in a long time. Check it out at: http://www.scottlynch.us/
Also, it uses the phrase "bumfuckery". Possibly more than once. Fantastic. I salute you Scott Lynch.
Ok, so I was looking up websites for authors I don't like (I'm strange like that) and I stumbled across the Terry Goodkind one. I'm not sure, but are these guys serious? Take a look at this thread: http://www.prophets-inc.com/forums/show
The Wikipedia "vandalism" made me smile a little, nothing terribly bad, but Goodkind comes across as being so damn full of himself that it couldn't hurt to poke a bit of fun at him. Look at the reactions! My favourite is the guy who says "The author of this obviously is a complete moron for not being able to grasp what the great philosophy underlying the series." He's a bit of a moron himself for not being able to grasp how to use grammar right is, but I digress. I have no doubt irony is going to come and bite me in the ass for making that comment..roll on the grammatical errors.
Look at what the thread degenerates into...foaming at the mouth about Lib'ruls and Commies...Those damn Commies! Even when it was the bears I knew it was the Commies! Are they for real?
I started reading Sword of Truth some time ago, and couldn't bring myself to finish it. The characters are so fucking stupid. The main bad guy (up to where I read) wants to ban fire, because it's dangerous. And burns. Of course, it could just be that Goodkind doesn't write lowgrade generic fantasy ripped off from Jordan's Wheel of Time, perhaps he in fact cleverly disguises philosophy as fantasy so us plebs can understand it. Or maybe, just maybe, he throws a little regurgitated Objectivism into the mix and then goes home to pleasure himself to pictures of Ayn Rand. Maybe. I didn't say he actually did.

Somewhat childish, but hey, it's all fun!
I have a livejournal page now.
